What’s the difference between group therapy and individual ADHD treatment?

If you’ve never tried group therapy before, it makes sense that you might feel hesitant to get started! There is quite a difference between group therapy and individual ADHD treatment. In individual sessions, you meet with just your therapist. The main difference between this and our ADHD support group is that instead of meeting with just one person, you will meet with a group of other femme-identifying individuals who likely encounter similar struggles to yourself. Instead of working one-on-one with an ADHD therapist, you’ll be in good company with folks who you likely have things in common with.

What is the purpose of an ADHD support group?

At our San Francisco, CA-based counseling center, we have extensive knowledge and experience in helping folks manage ADHD. Our therapists have created this support group in an attempt to offer additional support to women struggling with adult ADHD.

Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is a relatively new concept in the ADHD community. So, as our therapists have come to understand RSD on a deeper level, we have witnessed its unique impacts on women. RSD impacts folks’ ability to manage challenging emotions. And for women and femme-identifying folks, this presents uniques issues.

So, we have started an ADHD support group to create a space for women and femme-identifying individuals struggling with ADHD and RSD to learn skills and coping strategies. Our ADHD therapists are going to use a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) model to help women learn new skills to manage symptoms of ADHD and RSD.

What are the benefits of group therapy?

Dual Treatment

A major benefit of our ADHD support group is that you can add this as a part of your ADHD treatment plan. You have the option to continue individual ADHD treatment sessions in conjunction with our support group. This means that you’ll have more well-rounded and intensive care. Likewise, you may join our group if you are not currently seeking individual ADHD treatment. Additionally, this group will be held online, so it should be easy to fit into your schedule even if you have other weekly appointments!

Community Support

When you participate in group therapy, you can see the ways that ADHD and RSD uniquely manifest for you as well as for others. Being able to talk with others in similar situations allows you more exposure to understand how your symptoms may be showing up. And you can learn from group members about coping skills and ways that they have learned to manage in their lives. Having a community to bounce ideas off of and share common struggles with can be very beneficial and help you feel validated and heard.

Learning Skills

Our ADHD support group will have a focus on learning skills. While we want you to connect with group members and find commonalities, we also want to leave you with more coping skills than you came with! Much of our group sessions will focus on learning mindfulness skills to help you remain present in the moment when RSD causes challenging emotions to overwhelm you.

One of the central parts of our group will be homework. Talking about skills to manage ADHD and RSD is great, but they won’t stick without practice! Our ADHD therapists want to ensure that you are getting good take-aways from group sessions. So, each week, you’ll have homework to complete and report back about. Sharing your experiences from the previous week can help you find support and commonalities with other group members, only furthering the benefits of group therapy.
